A few friends went up Mauna Kea the other night to watch the meteor shower, and although I saw fewer than past years from the Perseids, I got probably my favorite Milky Way shot that I’ve done.
I think I ended up stacking 12 exposures for this one to get the clearest result.
Just before the glowing red from Mauna Loa we had the deep blue from a big swell early on Saturday morning. I got up just before sunrise to go shoot it at Honoli’i and they were the largest waves I’ve seen here so far with some around 15-20ft. Didn’t have time to make my morning coffee, but the excitement from watching these waves woke me up enough.

Mauna Loa from Saddle Road last night. Still miles away, but the smell was like it was right there. It’s hard to comprehend the amount of lava and gasses already released when this was taken less than 24 hours since the start of the eruption. Let’s hope it doesn’t make its way into populated areas and that we can safely get closer for viewing in the future. At night you can see the glow from almost anywhere in the middle and southern parts of the island, even 30 miles away where we live.

Yeah, it’s just a little dried lakebed dust and hot spring steam on my lens, it’s fine. Baylee and I got up at sunrise in like 10 Fahrenheit to walk to the natural source of the hot spring water that was piped to the hotel we stayed at. The ground was that dried sand that’s crisp on top and soft underneath. Like a sand crème brûlée? Also, check out the bones in the bottom right of the frame. π¦΄

Captured this shot of the glow from the lava lake at KΔ«lauea in front of the Milky Way back in early October. If you ever have a chance to safely visit an active volcano you should do it. It feels so primordial and it’s crazy that it is happening on planets all around the universe. This night the sky was super clear and there was a strong cold wind, perfect for seeing the Milky Way.
